Ema Keithel - The Mother's Market | Acrylic Painting by Jimmy Thiyam
Ema Keithel: Where Mothers Build an Economy
Presenting a stunning acrylic on canvas (23x40 inch) by renowned Manipuri artist Jimmy Thiyam
This painting is a heartfelt tribute to Ema Keithel, the iconic all-women market of Imphal-Manipur, recognised as the world's largest market run entirely by women, with a history of over 500 years.
About the Painting:
In this vertical composition, the artist stacks more than 20 Imas (mothers) in a vibrant, folk-modern style. Dressed in colorful _phanek_ and _enaphi_, the mothers are seen engaged in their daily rhythm — selling fresh fish, vegetables, bargaining, sharing stories, and guiding the next generation.
The background gradient from golden yellow to fiery red reflects the warmth, energy, and resilience of the market — from the morning sun to the bustling evening floor. Every basket, fish tray, and clay pot is painted with bold outlines and flat colors, giving it a lively, storybook feel.
More than just a marketplace, Ema Keithel is a symbol of women's empowerment, self-reliance, and cultural identity of Manipur. Through this work, Jimmy Thiyam captures not jmarket butt, but the spirit of motherhood that sustains a society.
