Divine Melodies Under the Moon: The Enchantment of Raas Leela

Image
Divine Melodies Under the Moon: The Enchantment of Raas Leela As the moon ascends, casting its silvery glow over a tranquil night, a magical scene unfolds beneath the ancient trees. Here, Lord Krishna, the divine enchanter, cradles his Banshi — a flute that weaves melodies so enchanting they seem to echo through the very fabric of the universe. Ethereal Dance of Devotion: Lord Krishna and the Gopis Under the Moonlight by Jimmy Thiyam With each note, the Gopis of Raas Leela are summoned, their hearts ignited with devotion. They twirl and sway in their exquisite Potloi, the vibrant Manipuri attire shimmering like liquid gold under the moonlight. This isn’t merely a dance; it’s a sacred expression of love, a celebration of the divine bond between Krishna and Radha, and a testament to the soul's yearning for union with the divine. In this ethereal moment, the world outside fades away, leaving only the pure essence of existence. The Raas Leela transcends mere performance; it becomes a s...

Strategising  Innovation  for removing Invasive Species    There are stories galore on how State agencies, and scientists, are devising innovative strategies in encouraging people to participate in the removal of invasive alien species of fishes and plants from the terrestrial landscapes and the traditional waters around the world. United States Experience See this story from Florida in the United States. Manipur's Wild West Scenario Is Destroying Social Security

Manipur's Wild West Scenario Is Destroying Social Security By Salam Rajesh Women of Manipur demand peace, but not at the cost of their survival. Photo: Facebook/Public Manipur today is living under a dark cloud. No one can say clearly who is protecting the people, and where social security has gone, especially for the most vulnerable people living where the valley meets the hills. The violence unleashed by suspected Kuki armed groups is tearing apart the social fabric of different communities in the State. It looks pre-planned and calculated, to divide people and to push a certain political objective. Many fingers are pointing towards the demand for autonomy.Whatever the objective of the militants may be, one question remains troubling. Where do the elected representatives of the Kuki community stand? They are part of a governance system bound by the Constitution of India. In particular, people are asking about the position of the Deputy Chief Minister who represents the Kangpokpi A...

Is the Suspension of Operations Pact Failing? Alarming Revelations from the Sinai Camp Raise Questions About Government Oversight and Rising Violence!

Kuki National Army and Kuki Liberation Army's camp raise serious questions about Government oversight and safety in the region   Is the Suspension of Operations Pact Failing? Alarming Revelations from the Sinai Camp Raise Questions About Government Oversight and Rising Violence! The situation at the Sinai camp, where a significant number of Kuki National Army and Kuki Liberation Army members are unaccounted for, highlights a critical failure in the enforcement of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement. This lack of oversight has allowed armed groups to operate with impunity, raising serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of the government's peacekeeping efforts. The on-going violence, including recent murders, underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive review and potential abolition of the SoO pact, as the current framework appears inadequate to ensure accountability and security in the region. We still remember that when the former Nort...

Manipur in the Crossfire: Why Ordinary Lives Are Paying the Price for Geopolitics

Smoke Over the Hills: The Human Cost of Conflict in Manipur   Title: Manipur in the Crossfire: Why Ordinary Lives Are Paying the Price for Geopolitics Villagers look on as smoke rises from homes reduced to cinders in the hills, capturing the stark reality of ongoing unrest and border vulnerabilities . The situation in Manipur has become a harrowing reality for its residents, who live in constant fear that everyday activities, such as visiting a neighbouring village or gathering firewood, could lead to violence or death. Despite political leaders acknowledging the delicacy of the situation, their reassurances do little to comfort citizens when violence erupts in their communities. Incidents like the tragic killing of three woodcutters in the Khongbal hills (situated in the foothills near the border of the Imphal East district near Nongsum and the Khamenlok area) and the brutal murders of Naga civilians illustrate the alarming vulnerability of ordinary people. Further, entire distric...

Manipur's Demographic Instability: Why NRC Must Come Before Census 2026

Image
Manipur's Demographic Instability: Why NRC Must Come Before Census 2026 Author: Salam Rajesh Manipur Map Introduction: The Heart of the Debate For the past few years, Manipur's population debate has moved to centre stage. It is no longer just about numbers, but about the geopolitical future of the state. With the decadal census already delayed, indigenous communities are raising a critical question: Can we count heads before we know who is living in the state? The demand is clear - implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur with 1951 as the base year, before the census. The Evidence on the Ground: Unaccounted Settlements Concern is not without basis. 1.   Forests Under Encroachment: An exercise by the State Forest Department to assess protected areas, especially reserved forests, revealed a startling fact. Since 1980, dozens of satellite hamlets have sprung up inside reserved forests without permission from the forest department or state administration. Satell...

New: Indigenous Knowledge in Conservation by Salam Rajesh   By Salam Rajesh | Senior Journalist based in Imphal, working with communities at Loktak Ramsar site and tribal communities on forest & wetland conservation in Manipur The Fortress Conservation Trap The fortress conservation model is a trap that limits and prevents important, Indigenous-led approaches to environmental stewardship, harming Indigenous people and the environment in one fell swoop. This sharp criticism of state-sponsored conservation model is the product of a study, Experts, not Obstacles: Indigenous Conservation Excellence and the Trap of Conservation at any Cost , an outcome of a Harvard Project on Indigenous Governance and Development (Policy Brief No.2, September 2025), produced by the Kennedy Harvard School and the Native Nations Institute at the University of Arizona. State-Sponsored Protected Areas vs Locals State-sponsored conservation model such as those seen in the implementation of Prote...

Addressing the Problems and Challenges of the Economy of Manipur

Addressing the Problems and Challenges of the Economy of Manipur Manipur is currently facing significant economic challenges that require urgent attention. The on-going unrest and blockades have severely impacted the state's revenue, leading to a staggering 70% drop in collections compared to the previous year. This decline is primarily due to the closure of National Highway-2 and limited transport on National Highway-37, which have disrupted the flow of goods and essential supplies. The transport sector is crippled, leading to shortages of high-value goods, including automobiles and electronics, which are crucial for GST revenue. Prices for essential goods are rising, further straining the financial capabilities of the populace, especially those living below the poverty line. Major online platforms have halted deliveries to Manipur, cutting off a vital revenue stream. The state government must implement immediate measures to provide jobs and support to the affected population. U...

MSPDCL's Financial Crisis: Unpaid Bills Soar to Rs 691.09 Cr amidst Power Supply Chaos (How will Sanaleibak achieve Inclusive Development?)  As the clock ticks down on MSPDCL's mounting crisis, the tension in Imphal reaches a boiling point. With unpaid dues soaring to an alarming Rs 691.09 crore and the company’s inability to provide reliable power, public frustration is palpable. Based on the report in The Sangai Express, Imphal, September 20, 2026, on (Dues of Rs 691.09 Cr yet to be collected as of Feb 2025), it is discovered that MSPDCL is not meeting public expectations because it is struggling to collect unpaid bills and manage the power supply properly. Education cannot move on emergency lamps and mobile data

MSPDCL in SANALEIBAK Education cannot move on emergency lamps and mobile data  MSPDCL's service today was highly irresponsible and condemnable. Conducting a PhD viva as an external examiner from Manipur for a student in Hyderabad without electricity, on mobile data and with two lamps, is unacceptable. This is negligence towards education and shows complete apathy to students and academicians. If you cannot provide stable and dignified power, how will digital education succeed? Education cannot run on emergency lamps and mobile data. Power is not free — we pay for it. When we pay regularly, we expect stable service, especially when important education programmes are going on. This is negligence towards education.

The Call for True Leadership in Manipur's 2027 Elections

The Future of Manipur Depends on Leaders who Prioritise Peace and Development As the 2027 Assembly elections in Manipur draw near, it is high time we concentrate on the true qualities of our future leaders over factors like money and muscle power. We need the category of leaders who promote peace by respecting all communities and resolving conflicts through dialogue rather than resorting to violence. The integrity of the candidate is vital, and our leaders should be free from corruption and should not engage in vote-buying. They must be courageous and responsible, making decisions that benefit Manipur in the long term. Moreover, the territorial integrity of Manipur should be protected at all costs. Frequently, the voting rights of poor people are purchased during elections, undermining the true spirit of democracy. Honestly, they should be given hope and confidence and allowed to freely choose their true leaders without inducement. A good leader will always be with us in the community,...

Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme in Sanaleibak

Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme in Sanaleibak The Poknapham Newspaper, Imphal (dated 30 September 2026), citing the CAG Report for the period (2018-19) to (2023-24), discovered that the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme in Manipur has suffered from serious deficiencies in planning, infrastructure, staffing and monitoring, leading to denial of benefits to a large number of intended beneficiaries. The report found that the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur, failed to prepare for the Annual Project Implementation Plan (APIP), which is mandatory for the release of Central funds. The monthly State Empowered Programme Committee meeting, which should be held every month, has not been held for the last 6 years. District and block-level monitoring committees were also not formed and were not functional. The target of constructing 3,000 Anganwadi was not achieved, and many Anganwadi Centres are functioning in rented buildings without cemented ...

Caught in Crisis: How Ethnic Tensions and Economic Shutdowns Are Reshaping Everyday Life in Manipur Based on data from The Sangai Express, Imphal (04 October 2026) | Part of Bharat 2027 Series Manipur is going through some very tough times right now. Because of ongoing tensions between different communities, daily life and business have become much harder for ordinary people. Imphal market empty + relief camps + police escort + Manipur map. Perfect emotional hook! Daily Life Under Escort Even though the Imphal-Dimapur highway has reopened, travellers still need police escorts, which cause long delays. A journey that should take 2-3 hours from Imphal to Ukhrul now takes over 5 hours if you miss the escort. There is a small sign of hope - people from Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Moreh are now landing at Imphal airport. But the ground reality remains harsh. Families Still in Relief Camps Many families are still stuck in relief camps across the state, and thousands of people ar...

Divine Manipuri Raas Leela Art by Jimmy Thiyam After my last blog on Ema Keithel, I am proud to present another young artist from young artist Jimmy Thiyam (BFA 7th Semester, Imphal Art College). It is one of the Classical Dances of India and UNESCO recognized intangible heritage.Art Details: Artist: Jimmy Thiyam Theme: Manipuri Maha Raas Leela Technique: Acrylic on Canvas with Pointillism dots Size: (Ask...

Maybe the Tip of an Iceberg

Financial Fraud Threatens State Stability of Sanaleibak – Maybe the Tip of an Iceberg Capital expenditure, so-called as 'CapEx', is crucial for building long-lasting infrastructure, enhancing productivity, and generating revenue. However, when diverted, it can lead to serious economic issues. A recent audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) (as also reported in the newspaper) has exposed significant financial irregularities in the Imphal East Division of the Public Works Department (PWD), raising urgent concerns about governance and accountability. Between September 2020 and January 2022, 150 unauthorised projects diverted a staggering ₹3.21 crore. Four contractors received payments for works that were not properly sanctioned, with 141 of these projects, worth ₹2.93 crore, being awarded to a contractor related to the then Engineer-in-charge. This violated standard contract rules. The report revealed excessive billing in the "Major Improvement of State Guest Hous...
